Failed Open Back or Neck Surgery

Failed open back or neck surgery refers to an ineffective open spine surgery or one that results in continuous pain or worsening symptoms. This condition is commonly referred to as Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS). FBSS can affect patients who have had open back or neck surgery to treat a number of spinal conditions, including spinal stenosis, bulging and herniated discs, foraminal stenosis, bone spurs, and more.

Causes

FBSS can result from a number of complications that can arise before, during, or after open back or neck surgery, including:

  • An improper diagnosis
  • Surgery at the incorrect location on the spine
  • Hardware rejection
  • The formation of scar tissue
  • Nerve damage
  • Infection
  • And more

FBSS treatment typically involves the same conservative methods that the patient tried prior to surgery, including physical therapy, corticosteroid spine injections, hot and cold compresses, and/or pain medication.

One way to avoid FBSS is to avoid having open spine surgery in the first place.
